Some ideas I used:

Set up a blog (I recommend using Google's www.blogger.com-mine's at http://roparslibrary.blogspot.com/) to document your daily work on writing/publishing

I didn't do this yet, but set up a web site which will probably cost some money-that's my next goal

Upon publishing, send a press release, found a cheap/easy/fast site: www.prnine.com ($19 for basic PR)
Set up Google account for analytics which is free and let's you analyze your site traffic (http://www.google.com/analytics/sign_up.html)

Set up Google Ad Words and set up ads to run on your budget-everything from text ads on searches (so you pick "love poetry" and when someone searches that on Google you can appear as an ad on the side-just like the ones on the far right of this site) - https://adwords.google.com/

Self publish via a site like CreateSpace.com which is owned by and feeds directly into Amazon and other sites they own worldwide (www.createspace.com)

Sign up for social networking sites like POV, facebook, myspace, and going (most major cities have a Going page such as going.chicago.com) and set up profiles with postings about your book and a trick I found-set up a social event which runs daily/weekly for months that is your book being available and maybe offer a discount to site members

One thing I haven't done, but am about to is get printed business cards, postcards, t-shirts, etc to help spread the word at bookstores or when you're wandering big events in the city or other highly traffic public places (www.vistaprint.com-dirt cheap and a lot of stuff free currently for sales)

Set up events on free classifieds like Craig's List and such-some research shows people view events more than new "for sale" items.

Use special offer codes if possible and assign them to each ad/avenue as another way to verify the success or failure of various choices.

Make a trailer and load it onto your various pages and YouTube.

Hello Bonnie,

I ordered low cost holiday and regular postcards from VISTA Print and sent them to places I do business with like my utilities bills, places in which I order things via the mail like Harry & David, Omaha Steaks, etc and some targeted areas who may have an interest in my book. This resulted in 103 book sales in the month I used this method.

Thanks,

Hi Bonnie, Another place you want to promote your book is Author's Den http://www.authorsden.com - after you register (free account) you can add your profile, post your picture, post your book, any events, reviews, and more. You also get daily updates on the number of hits on your book(s) which doesn't necessarily mean you've got sales, but it helps to know how many are checking the book out. You can also upgrade, at any time, but that costs money. There are more advantages to upgrading, but that's your choice and they don't hound you to upgrade.

I teach my authors to build strong relationships on and offline. Using the social networks is a start, and also being very responsive.

Best tidbit - go where your people hang out and put yourself in their path. It's like when I bring food out for my chickens who go after their food because I put it where they are. No need to call them or shout.

I also have a free report you may like at http://profitablestorytelling.com/launch which includes a 1 hr training & a weekly marketing tip.

Also John Kremer's site http://BookMarket.com is awesome.

See my profile for other writing networks too if you are interested. LEt me know how I may be of service to you.
